Corbett Tiger Reserve is perhaps one of the few
national parks in India, where one can stay in the heart of
the reserve. In fact, entry into this section is restricted
to those who have a permit to stay overnight in any one of the
five forest rest houses, namely, Sultan, Gairal, Sarpduli,
Khinnanauli or Dhikala.
These, age old forest bungalows - most of them built during
the time of the British - are situated by the Ramganga River or overlooking vast expanses of the fabled
"Dhikala grasslands", locally called 'chaurs', serve as an
idyllic base for those keen with wildlife, birds & being
one with nature. They are all, also, ideal locales for photographers.

The vast savannah supports an unusually high
herbivore density such as the Spotted Deer (Axis axis), Wild
Boar (Sus scrofa), and the rare Hog Deer (Axis porcinus).
Large
herds of Asiatic Elephants (Elephas maximus) pour out of the
forests in the summer months, congregate in the grasslands and
head for the Ramganga reservoir. The high herbivore density attracts carnivores such as
the Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris), Leopard (Panthera pardus), and
a variety of lesser cats including the Jungle Cat (Felis chaus).
The beautiful Ramganga valley, being a birder's paradise and
supports more than 600 species including, over 50 birds of
prey.
A trip to one of these Forest Rest Houses can be combined
with your stay at Camp Forktail Creek. A classic tour plan of
one such combination is mentioned below, however these trips
can be customized as per ones needs and interests. |

DHIKALA FOREST REST HOUSE AND CAMP
A sample tour plan for 5 nights and 6 days
Mid November to Mid June |
|
| |
This
special combination trip includes stay at Camp for 3 nights, a full day game
drive into the Bijrani range (entry into the Bijrani range is through
'Amdanda Gate'. Though this is a much smaller range it is preferred for
day-visits and has many criss-cross tracks, making wildlife tracking a joy. One
could do a game drive here in the morning, afternoon or the whole day)
and then 3 days at the Dhikala range, thus offering a mix of the best that
Corbett has to offer.
The trip includes game drives by 4WD jeeps & an elephant ride
in the National Park (subject to availability). Our resident naturalist &
driver would escort the whole trip. The costs would take care of boarding, lodging and all
activities as mentioned in the tour plan. Normally mineral water &
aerated drinks are included in the cost.
Day 1:Arrive at Camp Forktail Creek
Arrive at Camp Forktail
Creek by lunch. After wash and change and a sumptuous lunch, we would take
you on an escorted nature and bird walk into the Sal
forests surrounding camp. It is an excellent opportunity to walk in the cool
of the forest, to be so close to nature and to appreciate the varied plants,
insects, birds, mammals and reptiles that inhabit this part of the country.
THE QUIETER YOU ARE, THE MORE YOU WILL SEE.
Back to camp by sundown for campfire and dinner,
which is leisurely and personal. Along with the
excellent cuisine, your guide and hosts will amuse and amaze you with their
stories of exciting experiences. Then it is time to relax once again and
enjoy carefree chatter by the fireside whilst feasting on the unique sounds
and smells that your exclusive location offers, before retiring to bed with
only canvas separating you from the Indian jungles.
Day 2: Full day game drive into the Bijrani range
Early morning, depart for a full day game drive
to the Bijrani range to observe the wildlife of the area. Breakfast and lunch
would be served at the Bijrani FRH, specially packed by our chef at Camp.
After a full, action-packed day in the forest, we head back to camp by
sundown, just in time for that hot cup of tea.
After
a quick wash, join your hosts by the campfire for drinks and snacks and
resume the discussions leftover from the previous night. For those of you
weary from the long day, dinner would be ready under the Thatch after which
you could settle into your comfortable beds in the tent.
|
|
| |
Day 3: Camp to Dhikala range
Early breakfast and then
depart for the FRH at Dhikala. Enter through the Dhangari gate - a mere 6 kms
from Camp. Our route today would take us via
Gharial pool, Champion pool on Champion road and High Bank - each
one of them, great observation points on the Ramganga river.
Arrive at Dhikala by lunch. Post lunch game drive to the Dhikala "chaur"
- grasslands, to observe the varied bird and mammal species found in the
area. Back for an evening wildlife movie, dinner and overnight stay at the
FRH in Dhikala. |
|
| |
Day 4: Full day game drive at the Dhikala range
A brand new, exciting day
to view the wildlife & birds at Dhikala. Viewing would be split on
elephant back, game drives and nature walks.
An
early morning start for the elephant back safari in the neighboring forests.
Back to Dhikala for breakfast, post which we would go on a nature hike to an
observation tower, close by. After
this your time is your own for a "siesta", bird watching or
bantering with your guide (the Park remains shut for
game drives during the afternoon hours).
After
rejuvenating yourself in the afternoon, we get back into the jeeps for an
evening game drive in another direction- this time across the Ramganga River.
Back to Dhikala by late evening, followed by an early dinner and the
much-needed comfort of your bed. |
| |
|
Day 5: Dhikala to Camp
We start the day early
with a game drive to your most favorite part of the area, from your
experiences in the last couple of days.
Back to Dhikala for breakfast, after which we drive back to Camp Forktail
Creek, 35 kms away, with a packed lunch.
We would drive past and visit High bank, Champion Pool, Gharial Pool and the
interpretation center at the Dhangari gate. Arrive at Camp by evening where
you can take a leisurely wash and join your hosts by the campfire. This time
it'll be you telling the stories! |
|
| |
Day 6: Depart for onward journey
Wake up at leisure and
have a lavish breakfast at Camp. Bid goodbye to your naturalist and the rest
of the team. Depart for your onward destination after breakfast. |
