Our Special Trips - Mahout Training Programmes
Mahouts, people who train and care for elephants, have a mystical relationship with the animals they live and work with. With a series of physical commands and a gentle nudge or two behind their ears, Mahouts communicate beautifully with elephants and develop deep bonds with them.
Camp Forktail Creek, located on the periphery of Corbett Tiger Reserve, India (one of the few tiger reserves in the world where multi-day elephant back safaris are permitted in certain sections of the Reserve) is probably the only outfit in the region to have created a Mahout Training Program for people who want a deeper understanding of elephants. So for all elephant lovers, this is a trip you can’t miss!
What to Expect
There will be one elephant for every two guests from the beginning till the end of the course.
Guests should expect to spend most days with their elephant, gently building trust with it. They will be taught how to communicate (verbally and physically), feed, bathe and care for the mighty mammal. From time immemorial, Mahouts have been using traditional medicine to treat their elephants. Guests will also learn about these remedies, and how to administer them.
By the end of the program, guests will realize that each elephant has a distinct personality, moods, likes, dislikes and so on. They will learn to read these moods, and react accordingly.
